Free Streaming Concerts

Hey there sweet family,

Rowland and I attend a lot of concerts (as one of our friends says, “More than anyone else I know”) , but there are a few things that keep us from heading out to see an artist we like. One of them is a forecast of anything but perfect weather when a concert is being held at the Red Hat Amphitheatre in downtown Raleigh.

Red Hat has a lot of things going for it – loads of parking, close access to bars and restaurants, good sightlines, and a magical shimmer screen. The shimmer screen is a 9,284 sf  piece of art that adorns a building wall adjoining Red Hat.

The shimmer screen depicts a huge oak tree (Raleigh is the City of Oaks) and is made up of 79,464 light and dark aluminum squares that change shape and disappear as the squares flap in the wind. It is backlit at night by 56 light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, fixtures that can be programmed to flash and display more than a million different colors.

However, Red Hat provides absolutely no protection from the elements. So if the weather is going to be hot, windblown, wet, freezing, etc., you’re going to be too.

So, while we’ve wanted to see Gavin DeGraw (ok, make that me, *not* Rowland ) Tuesday at Red Hat, the forecast of a 100% chance of rain and thunderstorms put a soggy halt to those plans.

Until an unexpected rainbow appeared on the horizon in the form of a news release about Live Nation partnering with Yahoo to stream a FREE live concert every day in a rare win for music fans. The series, which includes Gavin’s concert at Red Hat Tuesday, offers FREE, high-quality concert footage in a way that helps the companies providing it, since selling ads is more profitable than concert promotion.

Thanks to the Live Nation/Yahoo partnership Rowland and I will be attending more concerts than ever now and, bonus, won’t have to worry about the weather – or the high cost of beverages!

Cheers!
